Started in the Fall of 2020, Hndsght is a creative studio and collection of works by Andy Fovel, emphasizing materials from the past and bringing them new life for the future.
After spending over 4 years working with clothing and realizing we are living in a world of excess, I decided to dedicate my artistic efforts towards the abundance of textiles that already exist in our lives. Emphasizing sustainability by working with fabrics and clothing remains that most would normally be deemed “unusable,” my work is an exploration of taking ordinary materials and transforming them into extraordinary pieces.
The Studio started as a simple hoodie brand and after 5 years, it has evolved into a world of textile artwork, house goods, and custom clothing.
Needless to say, this is only the beginning.
17 YEARS IN THE MAKING...
Hndsght originated in Cincinnati, OH from an idea I had to draw a smiley face on the back of a hoodie in the 6th grade (2008). When realizing that this idea had potential, I created a logo and four face variations, which began the short-lived hoodie brand "Smiley Hood." Smiley Hood was sold to a handful of his elementary school friends and left untouched after one product release.
When I moved to NYC in September 2019, I fell in love with the city's focus on style, open-mindedness, and its abundance of creative energy. He decided to take that original idea from 6th grade and turn it into something bigger and better.
Hndsght has been evolving ever since.
The "Hndsght" name was chosen for a handful of reasons.
- The concept was created by looking back on an idea from the past and reimagining it for the future.
- It emphasized the original detail of the eyes being on the back of the hoodie.
- There are no i's (eyes) in the name "Hndsght" because they were already located on the back of the hood.
- Hndsght is 20/20, which is the year the original brand was started (November, 2020).
